Domain Name:

Here is what Godaddy has to say about choosing a good Domain Name for your blog

——————————

Choosing the Right Domain Name

Selecting the right domain name is important, whether you’re going to resell it right away, monetize parked traffic or build out a site for resale.

Make it Short and Memorable

The right domain should be short, easy to spell and pronounce, memorable for your visitors and should not contain odd characters or numbers. This will avoid any confusion and lost traffic due to incorrect spelling. Your domain should be unique in nature. Having your site confused with other Web sites can result in a loss of traffic.

Descriptive Keywords

Your domain should be descriptive and, if you have a business site, well-suited for the product or service you are selling. Selecting the right domain name will also help build search engine traffic. Try to choose a domain name that includes the key word or phrase that best describes your product or service - this will help index your Web site within search engines, creating more traffic to your website. For example, if your Web site sells bicycle parts, it can certainly give you an advantage if you have the phrase “bicycle parts” or “bike parts” in your domain name, such as bostonbikeparts.com. Most search engines, like Google®, direct visitors to sites that contain their search keywords in the domain name.

Avoid Trademarks

To avoid confusion or potential legal trouble, stay away from domains that contain another company’s trademark and keywords that resemble another Web site’s brand name.

Hosting and Installing WordPress:

Install Wordpress in Added Domains in Hostgator’s Web Hostings

Some Basic Facts of Hostgator Hosting Plans

At the time of writing this blog, Hostgator has various web hosting plans.

As Wordpress is normally installed on Linux Servers, Hostgator’s Linux Web Hosting Packages will only be discussed here. Windows Web Hosting will be ignored.

Hostgator offers a Hatchling, Baby and Business Packages in their standard web hosting section. There is also a Reseller Hosting Section. More on this Reseller Section later.

It is best to leave well alone the Hatchling Package, as you cannot add Domain Names to it. You are allowed only one Domain with it, this rather limits its functionality. [Nevertheless, at $4.95 (provided you pay 3 years in advance $178.20, otherwise it is $8.95 plus $5 setup fee; it is slightly cheaper if paid annually or every 24 months)]

I would recommend the Baby Plan as it offers unlimited Domain add ons. Paying for 36 months in advance, brings it down to $7.95 monthly. Otherwise it is $9.95 per month. [If you want serious about your blogging and want to make money with your blogs, then I would recommend you pay 36 months upfront, as there will be less chance that within 12 months if you fail to renew, due to some mishap, you will have your account cancelled and lose your hosting, just when it is coming up to earning standard]

Once you have set up your baby hosting with a primary domain name (that is the one that you allocate at the time of purchase), you can start adding your domain names via the cpanel of your primary domain. Hence I have always register a few good keyword domains with Godaddy and change their name servers to that of my hostgtor’s baby account (which you should receive via email as soon as you have purchased your hostgator web hosting package).

Having added maybe two or three of these domain names, I start to install Wordpress in each of them to ready them for my blogs.

How To Install Wordpress

First I would fire up the cpanel of my primary blog in my web browser (I would recommend you download Firefox and use it, as it is far more efficient) thus

http://www.yourprimarydomainname.com/cpanel

sample: http://www.StartaWebBlog.com/cpanel

You will instantly be greeted with a request for your username and password. (This is what you selected at the time of your hostgator web hosting purchase)

After entering yur username and password and pressing the OK button, you will enter your cpanel.

[Here, I urge you to buy the 'In Depth cPanel' from http://www.start-blogging-online.com/ for a mere $7. They are a mine of information on all the inticacies of the cpanel. Well worth the $7 of your investment!)

Inside your cpane, in the second last section headed Software/Services you should see the smiley icon marked 'Fantastico De Luxe'

Clicking it should bring you into the Fantastico's Control Panel.

In the right hand column, you will see 'Wordpress'. Clicking it will bring forward the WordPress installation screen with these paragraphs

New Installation  (2.6.3)

Current installations:

Click the New Installation and you are ready to install Wordpress

[Once again, I urge you to buy the 'In Depth cPanel Videos' from http://www.StartaWebBlog.com/cpanelindepth/ (cPanel Videos)and watch video04 called 04CpanelFantastico_fl.zip; this shows step-by-step instructions of installing your Wordpress]

The ‘Install on domain’ window will show your primary domain name. Pressing the down arrow of this window will present you with a list of all your added domains.

Choose the domain that you want your Wordpress to be installed in. My preference is that first, I will install Wordpress in a subdirectory of my primary domain name. This I always name blog. To do this put the word ‘blog’ in the Install in directory window, leaving the primary domain name as it is.[Do not put a / in front or after the word 'blog']

[Do not worry, you can always remove your installation if you make a mistake.  It is very easy to do so. After your installation is completed, you will be presented with the option to remove it. Just click the 'Remove' and hey presto, its removed! Back again to step one!!]

You will have to select an Administrator username and a password. I invariably select ‘admin’ and ‘letmein’; both in lower case. I usually change my password at a later date. [This too is easy and done from inside Wordpress, once it is set up]

My Admin nickname is usually admin as well. My email address is always different to the one shown. I normally use my gmail email address, as it is not normally lost in my spam folder.[I would advise you to do the same. Do not use the one shown, as you may not have set it up in your cpanel[This is where your

'In Depth cPanel Videos' are so handy!]

Change the Site name to what you want it to be and a good keyword loaded one line description is a must. Both these will appear in your header. Hence give them some thought.

Once the screen with this appears:

The MySQL database and MySQL user ashumer_wrdp1 will be created and used for this installation.

- You chose to install in the domain startawebblog.com, in a subdirectory called blog.

After hitting the ‘Finish installation’ button and waiting a short while, you will be presented with the full details of your installation. I suggest you copy and paste these too in the same notepad that you copied step 2/3. This information will be useful one day.
